Joint options for patios and paths

Joint options for patios and paths

The type of materials available for filling joints does depend on the size of your joints. Typically you have either fairly tight joints when using concrete pavers or wider joints when working with natural flagstone.

What material are you working with?

Flagstone Joint Options

NOCOSTORM by Techniseal

A multi-weather jointing compound for pavers, natural stones, permeable slabs, and outdoor porcelain.

Pros: Easy installation, easy cleaning, prevents weed growth and ant hills

Cons: Cannot be easily pulled up after installation, does deteriorate over many years and need replenished. More costly than gravel.

Fine Washed Sand

Very fine-grained sand. Natural tan/gray in color.

Pros: Packs tightly between the stones of more narrow joints, permeable.

Cons: Will deplete over time and come out when sweeping or pressure washing and need to be replenished.

1/4" Minus Crushed Rock

Tiny rock shards that are 1/4" at the largest and dust at the smallest. The smaller fines get between the larger shards and allow this product to pack extremely well.

Pros: Packs well, multiple color options.

Cons: Size may be too large for some smaller joints

Soil or Compost

With soil or compost between the stones, you can plant grass, moss or steppable plants.

Pros: drainage, appealing.

Cons: Maintenance of the grass or plants may be higher or more susceptible to weed growth.

Pea Gravel

Small 3/8" round pebble rock.

Pros: Multiple color options. Optimal drainage.

Cons: Will continuously move and shift causing them to constantly roll up on top of the patio stones.

Paver Joint Options

Nextgel by Techniseal

A polymeric sand that will harden and lock between the pavers, securing them in the same position.

Pros: Easy installation, easy cleaning, prevents weed growth and ant hills.

Cons: Must be sure to direct water properly, cannot be easily pulled up after installation.
