Alder Play Chips are made of alder. They work well in a playground area because they do not splinter, like other woods tend to. This product can also be used as ground cover. It has a lighter, whiter color than the other barks.
When applied in play areas, it should typically be put in a minimum of 6-inches thick dependent upon the height of play structures.
When using as a ground cover to help suppress weed growth and retain soil moisture, the typical installation involves a layer 2 - 4" thick that will need to be replenished about once a year. Be sure when laying bark or chips to pull the material back from the stalks of your shrubs and plants to allow air flow and prevent rotting.
It is not a state certified playground chip but has been in use for playground areas in our area for years. If you are a licensed school or daycare, then you might want to look at the Certified Play Chips.
